The Viking Missions to Mars stamps were issued by the USA in 1978 to commemorate the first two Viking Missions. The first launched in 1975 and stopped transmissions from Mars in 1982 and the second launched in 1976 and stopped transmissions in 1980. Following that the next successful mission was in 1996 and it wasn't until the 21st century that missions to Mars started again in earnest.
