Penny Black Centenary stamps mint framed from 1940
£29.95
Framed genuine mint postage stamps issued in 1940 for the Centenary of the first British postage stamp. This was the Penny Black which was issued in 1840. The stamps show King George 6th and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother who were the parents of Queen Elizabeth 2nd. The stamps were probably designed and printed in good time in 1939 before the start of World War 2. During the war the darker more intense colours used on these stamps were changed on other stamps to paler colours to save ink. It's said that this saved 8 tons of ink per year. Available with a white or green background
